Soul-Mating

by E.T. Robbins

A friend of mine asked if I believed there was one person for everyone. A so-called “soul mate.”

Having survived the last five years with a heart broken more times than Clinton’s wedding vows, I was happy to offer some wisdom.

“Absolutely. With six billion people in the world there is definitely at least one person for everyone.”

The problem is hooking up with this person. I’m absolutely convinced my soul mate is in Uganda stroking a mountain gorilla right now.

Let’s face it. Being single in the 21st century isn’t easy. With all the technological advances that have been made on things like cell regeneration, cloning, deciphering the genetic code, and microwave popcorn you would think someone somewhere would have made match-making an exact science.

Of course, many people believe they have the answers. Here are two of my favorites:

1. You need to get out there!

What is out there? Is this a product I can buy and spray underneath my armpits? Or is “out there” a place? The single person’s Mecca? If you know where out there is, point it out on a map. I’ll make a pilgrimage.

2. It will happen when you least expect it.

This contradicts the first piece of advice. If I’m bothering to “get out there,” then I am obviously “expecting” something to happen. No, maybe not right away. Just sometime before I trade in Tampax for Depends.

What does this show? It shows that no one has the answers probably because there are no answers. The only thing that we know is that there are six billion people in the world. And I suspect a lot of them are like me. Looking. Hoping. Trying to get out there while at the same time not expecting to meet that special someone.

Sounds too complicated. I wonder what time the next plane to Uganda takes off?
